The Chandelier Room

In 1916 Ipswich butcher and pastoralist, J.P. Bottomley commissioned prominent architect George Brockwell Gill to design a family home.

Bottomley was the youngest of 14 children and was born in Bradford, Yorkshire. He arrived in Ipswich in 1884. Initially working with Watson Brothers Butchers, he later established his own butchery and purchased pastoral land in the Burnett and western districts.

Bottomley became a high profile Ipswich figure, serving for nine years on the Purga Shire Council, including four years as chairman, and serving the Ipswich City Council for two years. He was also

president of organisations including the Ipswich Show Society, Ipswich Chamber of Commerce, Queensland Pastoral and Agricultural Society & the Ipswich Bowling Club.

The house remained in the Bottomley family until 1959 when it was purchased and officially opened as The Ipswich Club in 1960.

The building has undergone significant internal changes since its purchase, most notably the construction of a bar in the front east wing and enclosure of the verandah on the front west wing to become The Gallery Room. The rear east wing has been extended to the back, obscuring the original line of the verandah while creating The Chandelier Room. All decorative ceilings have remained intact along with all the joinery in the central hall.

The Ipswich Club is a superb example of Federation architecture.
